About Trout Camp
John Thurman Trout Adventure Camp (formerly Great Smoky Mountains Trout Adventure Camp) is sponsored by the Tennessee Council of Trout Unlimited (TU).
Who can attend?: boys and girls aged 12-16 at the time of the camp. Trout Unlimited requires a minimum of at least two campers of one birth gender to be accepted for them to attend; this usually applies to young women. Interested young women may wish to encourage a friend to join them. tennessee residency is not required but encouraged. applicants should have an interest in fishing, science, and the outdoors. the camp is aimed at youth who have little to no experience with the sport of fly fishing.
When is camp being held?: June 16-21, 2025
Where is camp based?: trout camp is based at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (GSMIT), located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park near townsend, tennessee. most activities occur in the immediate area of gsmit although some activities (snorkeling, some fishing activities) are held outside the gsmit campus. Gsmit is a renowned nonprofit environmental learning center located on the middle prong of the little river in the great smoky mountains national park in east tennessee. facilities include dormitories, dining hall, classrooms, labs, platform tents, meeting rooms, and a bookstore and gift shop.
what activities occur At Trout Camp? campers will learn how to fly cast in mountain streams, tie flies that catch trout, tie fly fishing knots and select proper fly fishing equipment. They will fish with Trout Unlimited mentors who are expert mountain stream anglers. In addition, they will learn about stream ecology, aquatic invertebrates and fish that inhabit mountain streams and how they are affected by stream chemistry, stream physics and watershed health. They will help National Park Service biologists conduct fish sampling and snorkel with biologists in Little River, observing aquatic life in its native habitat. By the end of camp, participants will be able to go to a mountain stream and know where trout are likely to be, select an appropriate fly to represent an insect that trout eat and use proper casting techniques; and they will have an understanding of and appreciation for TU’s mission.
what will it cost for a camper to attend? for 2025 tuition is $550 IN STATE AND $750 Out OF STATE per camper. NO MORE THAN 18 campers will be accepted. Financial assistance may be available through your area Trout Unlimited chapter (https://www.tctu.org/chapters.html).
when can an interested youth apply? Applications will be accepted from december 1, 2024 to may 15, 2025. The selection process begins mARCH 1, 2025. As campers are selected, parents/guardians will be notified and provided instructions and a medical form. Applicants should be in good physical condition.
